Inaugurating a five-day workshop on "simple diagnostic methods in infectious diseases" organised by the Department of Microbiology in JIPMER here today, Prof. Thyagarajan said although researchers and students could access various scientific facts thanks to information and technology explosion, there should be practical training and hands on exposure through such workshops. The scientific discoveries and research findings by experts should be patented under the Intellectual Property Rights as this would have multifarious advantages in evaluating the techniques at the global level. He called upon the scientists in developing countries to adopt diagnostic approaches to ailments such as malaria and ensure that effective methods were evolved. S. Badrinath, Director (in charge), JIPMER, said simple diagnostic methods in infectious diseases were the need of the hour. The Dean of JIPMER, K.S. Reddy, released the manual of the workshop. The Head of Department of Microbiology, S.C. Parija, said 25 experts from various institutions and colleges attended the workshop.
