Tight security at Sabarimala

PATHANAMTHITTA Dec. 2. The police have made elaborate arrangements to ensure tight security at Sabarimala from December 5 to 7 in view of the reported State-wide `black day' call given by certain organisations on December 6, the day the Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh was demolished in 1992.

Talking to The Hindu, the Inspector -General of Police, V.R. Rajeevan, who is also the Chief Police Coordinator for Sabarimala, said the police had taken all possible steps to check any untoward incidents. All pilgrims would have to pass through metal detectors at various points on the Neelimala trekking path, Chandranandan Road and the Pulmedu (Uppupara) path from December 5 to 7.

A Special Intelligence Cell under a Superintendent of Police, Velappan Nair, has been set up at Sabarimala. More `spotters' were deployed at different points in Sabarimala and a team of experts from the State Special Branch Police have been camping at the holy hillock for the last three weeks.

The Police Special Officer at Pampa, Sunil Asnani, said a one-way system would be put in place at Pampa to regulate the flow of pilgrims.
