Export growth slows

NEW DELHI DEC. 2 . The trade deficit has more than doubled to $9.2 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal (April-October 2003-04) from $4.4 billion at the same period last year. This is a result of imports outpacing exports over this period. Imports have risen by 23. 4 per cent while export growth has slowed down to 8.44 per cent.

According to the latest data released by the Union Commerce Ministry today, export growth slipped in October to 5.07 per cent after the buoyant 16 per cent recorded in the previous month.

Exports during the month are estimated at $4.8 billion as against $4.6 billion in the same month last year.

Overall, exports for April-October 2003 recorded a growth of 8.44 per cent at $32 billion as against $29.5 billion during the corresponding period last year. Imports in contrast rose by 23.47 per cent in October to $6.9 billion from $5.5 billion in the same month last year.
