N.P. Singh wrecks Karnataka

By Our Sports Reporter

HYDERABAD DEC. 2. A fine spell by 30-year-old medium-pacer N.P. ingh (six for 31), helped Hyderabad bundle out Karnataka for 100 and be back in the reckoning on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group league cricket match at Gymkhana Grounds here on Tuesday.

Resuming at 64 for three, in reply to Hyderabad's 177, Karnataka was bowled out for 100 in 47.4 overs with N.P. Singh coming up with a dream spell of 10.5-4-19-6 on a pitch which assisted the pacemen, particularly in the pre-lunch session.

Exploiting the bowler friendly conditions to the hilt with a nagging line and length, and more importantly, swinging the ball away appreciably, N.P. Singh triggered the collapse by sending back Barrington Rowland (28) and clean bowling Venkatesh Prasad (2) very early in the morning. The others just failed to come good against Singh's quality bowling and when he cleaned up last man N.C. Aiyappa, he claimed his 250th Ranji victim in his 78th match, and recorded his 12th haul of five wickets or more in his career spanning over a decade.

In reply, Hyderabad was 187 for six at close to take an overall lead of 264 with four wickets in hand. Southpaw Daniel Manohar (57, 255m, 137b, 7x4) was in punishing mood treating the Test discards Venkatesh Prasad and Dodda Ganesh with scant respect. Nandakishore (38, 6x4) played a patchy knock but D. Vinay Kumar (33, 5x4, 1x6) looked in good touch again but failed to capitalise on the good start.

For Karnataka, Dodda Ganesh and Aiyappa claimed two wickets each, while Venkatesh Prasad and Stuart Binny one apiece. Overall, the catching of Karnataka, particularly in the slip cordon was shoddy as at least four clear chances were floored. At close, Ibrahim Khaleel (26) and J. Shivaji Yadav (0) were at the crease.

The scores: Hyderabad 177 & 187 for six in 66 overs (Daniel Manohar 57, A. Nandakishore 38, D. Vinay Kumar 33) vs Karnataka 100 in 47.4 overs (N.P. Singh six for 31).
