State awards for disabled persons

Bangalore Dec. 2. The Department of Welfare of Disabled will present State awards to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), individuals with disabilities, and special educators at the Kanteerva Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday to mark World Disabled Day.

Speaking to presspersons on Tuesday, D. Thangaraj, Principal Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, said awards would be given to disabled persons who had made a mark in society, and NGOs which had done commendable work for the cause of disabled persons.

Teachers who imparted education to persons with disabilities would be presented the "Best Teacher Award", he added.

Those chosen for the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 each, are Malathi Holla, C.K. Lakshminarayana Gupta, Ramesh Tikaram, Veena Srinivasan, G.K. Manjunatha (all from Bangalore), and Mymuna from Dakshina Kannada district.

The Best Teacher award will be presented to Geethabali, serving as special teacher for the visually impaired at the Ramana Maharshi Academy for the Blind, Bangalore; S. Padma, who served as Headmistress in R.V. Integrated School for the Hearing Impaired, Bangalore; M.R. Prema, special teacher for mentally challenged children at Balamanovikasa Special School, Bangalore; H. Suseelakshi, special teacher, Ashakiran Special School, Shimoga; and C. Chandrappa, teacher, Government Higher Primary School, Chikmagalur. Each teacher will receive a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.

The NGOs chosen are Spastic Society of Karnataka, Bangalore, and Seon Ashrama Trust, Mangalore. They will receive a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 each.

The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, will inaugurate the function and present the awards. The Minister for Women and Child Development, Motamma, and the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Kagodu Thimmappa, will participate.
