The focal theme of the convention, to be organised in collaboration with the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) and the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists-India (ASFT-I), is "Innovative food technologies and quality systems strategies for global competitiveness''. The convention, which will have a food exhibition comprising innovative food products and equipment used in their manufacture, will have plenary lectures in addition to 25 sessions, where distinguished speakers will deliver parallel talks. Addressing a press conference here today, the CFTRI Director and Chairman of IFCON-2003 Steering Committee, V. Prakash, said the convention would discuss the emergence of food technology as a sector that would help the country generate additional employment. The recommendation of the convention would assist policy-makers and development of small-scale industries, he added. The convention will have plenary lectures everyday in the morning session. The plenary lectures will be in addition to the 25 parallel sessions planned for the convention. Dr. Prakash said the athlete, P.T. Usha, would participate in the convention. The CFTRI was providing technical know-how on nutrition for sportspersons to an academy for training athletes established by Ms. Usha in Kerala. She would speak on "Diet for athletes''. The scientist, M.S. Swaminathan, will inaugurate the convention at 9 a.m. at CFTRI premises. The Minister for Cooperation, H. Vishwanath, will inaugurate the food exhibition. The Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, J. Shashidhara Prasad, will release a poster souvenir. The President of International Union of Food Scientists and Technologists, Walter Spiess, will release the technical souvenir. The convention will conclude on Monday with a valedictory address by the Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, N.T. Shanmugam.
