The CPI(M) had been critical of the approach of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in filing the amended affidavit in the Supreme Court on the grounds that it did not name the conspirators in the Babri Masjid demolition case. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and the Samajwadi Party chief was upset over the criticism and questioned the role of the CPI(M) in taking on the "communal forces'' in Uttar Pradesh. While acknowledging that the CPI(M) had voiced its concern openly, Mr. Chatterjee said that Mr. Yadav may have compulsions of running a Government but hoped he would not approve of the demolition with retrospective effect. He then complimented the Samajwadi Party saying that "at least the party has not jettisoned opposition unity." The Samajwadi Party leader, Ramjilal Suman, was present at the floor-coordination meeting of the Opposition leaders today. Similarly, relations of the Samajwadi Party with the Congress, which has been extending outside support to the Yadav Government have also begun to sour. A section of the party has been suggesting that the Congress should get out of the arrangement on an appropriate occasion. A senior party leader today said the Congress would have to prepare itself for such an eventuality. There have also been charges against Mr. Yadav that he has become soft towards the Bharatiya Janata Party, an accusation that he denies.
