ACP held in fake stamp case

PTI

MUMBAI DEC. 2. A day after the arrest of the former Mumbai Police Commissioner, R.S. Sharma, in connection with the stamp paper scam, another top-ranking police officer was tonight taken into custody for alleged lapses in the probe. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, R.B. Yenam, of the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate was arrested here for allegedly shielding the crime syndicate of the prime accused, Abdul Karim Telgi. He would be produced before a court tomorrow, police sources told PTI.

Mr. Yenam is the eighth policeman to be arrested in this case. The other six are the Joint Commissioner of Police (Intelligence), Sridhar Vagal, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gokul Patil, Inspectors Dattatraya Dal and Vashist Andale, Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Kamat, and Sub-Inspector Prabhakar Kakade.

Sharma remanded

The Judicial Magistrate First Class of Pune, M.N. Bondre, today remanded the former police commissioner of Mumbai and Pune, Ranjit Singh Sharma, to police custody till December 9. Mr. Sharma was produced in the special court amid unprecedented security.

He was arrested in Mumbai yesterday for alleged connivance in shielding of the prime accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, Abdul Karim Telgi and taken to Pune. The Special Public Prosecutor, Raja Thakare, had told the court that police custody was needed to investigate if he had political backing.

Opposing the remand plea, Mr. Sharma's lawyer argued that he was being singled out for the alleged crime and the case amounted to double jeopardy since he faced the same charges in the departmental inquiry. Mr. Thakare said Mr. Sharma had civil and criminal liability in the matter. The Chief Minister, Sushilkumar Shinde, hesitantly admitted here today that the arrest of the former police commissioner was certainly not a matter of pride for the Maharashtra Police.
