`State should woo pharmaceutical industries'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI DEC. 2. "The pharmaceutical industry in Tamil Nadu needs a boost. There are just a handful of big pharmaceutical companies in this State, which is very small compared to States such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka," said B. Suresh, President of the Pharmacy Council of India and the Tamilnadu Pharmacy Council, explaining why the 55th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress will be held at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute here.

The event, to be held on December 19, 20 and 21, will bring together five organisations — Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Indian Pharmacy Graduates Association, Indian Hospital Pharmacists Association, Association of Pharmacy Teachers of India and the All India Drugs Control Officers' Confederation. Centred on the theme `Pharmacy, Medicine Management and the National Health Policy,' the IPC is expected to bring together about 6,000 delegates from around the country.

The event will include an exhibition of pharmaceutical equipment and machines, scientific presentations by students and staff and a research presentation by both national and international speakers.

According to Mr. Suresh "there is going to be a lot of activity post GATT 2005 and it is vital that we attract the industry to this State by then." With a number of international companies participating in the exhibition, the IPC hopes to attract multinational firms and encourage outsourcing. "While there are just about four large companies in the State, we have more than 200 small-scale industries. They have a spare capacity that can be utilised by large companies looking for infrastructure for their own development."

Mr. Suresh said the Rs.10-crore Indian pharmaceutical industry had grown into a Rs. 20,000-crore industry and there were still tremendous opportunities for growth.
