Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
About 200 persons from the United Colony, Thirumalai Nagar and Kamarajar Nagar gathered opposite a shop located in the colony and raised slogans against the decision. R. Joseph, member, United Colony Residents' Welfare Association, said the opening of wine shops near residential areas would cause nuisance to people going through the colony. The residents alleged that many shops were opened near schools and in residential colonies. Representatives of the welfare association submitted a petition to the Perambur tahsildar, R.Thirunavukkarasu, ten days ago. Mr. Thirunavukkarasu asked the demonstrators to call off the protest and assured them that the United Colony wine shop would be closed and shops would not be permitted that to come up in other colonies. Residents of Raja Annamalaipuram complained that a wine shop on Fourth Main Road was reopened on Monday despite protests. Women in the locality were afraid of using the road even during daytime, as consumers gathered there.
