New look operation theatre at MCH

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 2. The `B' operation theatre, which has undergone refurbishment at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore, will be formally opened as a state-of-the-art facility on Wednesday.

The Health Minister, P. Sankaran, will formally open the theatre, which had been closed down for the past few months for a revamping exercise as part of an action-plan to elevate the Medical College into a centre of excellence.

The new, state-of-the-art theatre, which will tackle most of the elective surgeries, will be equipped for renal transplants, open heart and bypass surgical procedures, lithotripsy procedures and complex neurosurgeries.

The theatre, spread over 10,000 sq ft, will also have laminar air flow system. It would have nine operating tables and a three-bedded Critical Care Unit with three ventilators for post-surgical care. It is now proposed to treat the bulk of trauma care and acute diseases of infectious nature at a separate emergency theatre with four operating tables and a ventilator-equipped recovery room set up at the Casualty.

Meanwhile, MCH authorities propose to shut down the `A' theatre where the bulk of general surgeries were being performed, on December 20. This theatre is also being spruced up on similar lines.

According to the MCH Superintendent, D. Dalus, provisions had also been made to provide add-on facilities such as a viewing gallery for medical students to witness operative procedures as they are performed.

The fully computerised pharmacy counter is also being formally opened on the occasion. The computerisation of a range of functions ranging from stocktaking to billing had been undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs.25 lakhs.
