Sri Lanka detains 77 fishermen

By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO Dec. 3. Seventy-seven Indian fishermen and 13 trawlers were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for ``poaching'' in the island's northern territorial waters in two incidents on Tuesday night.

According to the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry, 63 fishermen were first apprehended by naval troops on routine patrol off the northern Kayts islet. The Navy ``recovered 43 fishing nets, 11 empty diesel cans, 120 litres of diesel and 937 kg of fish among several items'' from the trawlers. The same naval patrol later apprehended a second batch of 14 Indian fishermen and ``detained'' them for questioning, the Defence Ministry said.
