Cricket
By Mohandas Menon
1st day Nathan Bracken became the 387th player to appear in a Test for Australia and the first Australian left-arm paceman since Brendon Julian. The second wicket stand of 89 between Langer and Ricky Ponting was the best for Australia against India at this venue bettering the 83 between Mark Taylor and David Boon in November 1991. 2nd day The Langer-Damien Martyn stand of 106 was the best for the Aussies against India at this ground for the third wicket. They bettered 101 between Don Bradman and Lindsay Hassett against the Indians in 1947-48. Langer' 121 was his 16th Test hundred in 68 matches. It was his second against India (he made a 223 against India at Sydney in January 2000). Steve Waugh recorded the 22nd duck of his career in 165 Tests - the most by any genuine batsman in Test cricket history. The Martyn run-out was the 23rd involving Steve Waugh's batting partner and his 27th overall, including his own four run-outs. Waugh's hit-wicket was the 22nd instance of an Australian being dismissed in such a manner. The last Australian to do so was Kim Hughes - against England at the Oval in August 1981. Waugh also becomes the only third Australian captain to be out hit-wicket after Don Bradman (185 against India at Brisbane in November 1947) and Kim Hughes (31). The five-wicket haul was Zaheer Khan's third in 27 Tests. All the three have come in successive Tests away from home. He had figures of five for 53 and five for 29 at Wellington and Hamilton respectively against New Zealand in December last.
