Jammu & Kashmir
By Shujaat Bukhari
Early in the morning, a contingent of police arrived at Mr. Geelani's Hyderpora residence and told him that he could not move out. "Yes, I have been put under house arrest and police is still outside my house,'' he told The Hindu over phone. Even as the Geelani-led faction of the Hurriyat had called off the public meeting after the district administration told them to change the date and venue, and had, instead, given a call for a strike, police apprehended that he might hold protest demonstration. "We have restricted his movement considering his security,'' the IGP Kashmir Zone, K. Rajindra, said. The Government did not allow the meeting since it was December 6 (demolition day of Babri Masjid), he added. But Mr. Geelani said it was "complete frustration on the part of the Government'' and they decided to put me under house arrest. '' Meanwhile, the strike call given by the faction did not evoke much response. Barring closure of a few shops in the Civil Lines, normal life in Srinagar was not affected.
