Bihar Minister attacked

Patna Dec. 6. The Bihar Excise Minister, Shivanand Tiwari, escaped unhurt when a mob at a book fair here attacked him after he allegedly made uncharitable remarks against D.P. Ojha, who was unceremoniously removed as State police chief today.

Official sources said the mob started throwing slippers and brickbats and chased Mr. Tiwari, who was hurriedly escorted by his security to a small cabin at the book fair. He was forced to remain confined for two hours there. Police resorted to a "mild lathi-charge" in an attempt to free the Minister. The mob damaged a few parked vehicles.

The Union Minister, Sanjay Paswan, who was a visitor, came to the rescue when he learnt of Mr. Tiwari's predicament. Mr. Paswan escorted Mr. Tiwari to safety to his own car through the rear entrance of the fairground. Mr. Tiwari, along with the former Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party leader, Ramvilas Paswan, the state BJP chief, Gopal Narain Singh, and the BPCC president, Ram Jatan Sinha, had gone to the fair for an interactive session organised by Hindustan Times. The mob fury was reportedly sparked when Mr. Tiwari allegedly made some "uncharitable remarks" against the ousted Director-General of Police. Mr. Paswan, Mr. Sinha and other leaders had left the venue by then. — PTI
