An emotional BJP leader and the Rajasthan Chief Minister-designate, Vasundhara Raje, at a meeting in Jaipur on Saturday. PTI
JAIPUR, DEC. 6. The newly elected MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan today chose Vasundhara Raje, the party's State president, as their leader. She will take over as the next Chief Minister on Monday in a ceremony in front of the Assembly. Ms. Raje's election was unanimous with the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, Gulab Chand Kataria, proposing her name and the vice-president of the party, Sanwarlal Jat, supporting it in the presence of the Central observers the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, and the BJP general secretary, Pramod Mahajan. In quick succession, 14 MLAs, including the State general secretary, Narpat Singh Rajvi, and senior leader, Ghanshyam Tiwari, expressed support to the proposal. Even though it was a foregone conclusion that Ms. Raje would be the leader and next Chief Minister, Mr. Singh asked for an alternative name. There was no other claimant and the MLAs garlanded her and touched her feet. Wiping tears of joy, Ms. Raje touched the feet of Mr. Singh and Mr. Mahajan before accepting the "onerous responsibility," which she said, at times "scared her."
