Sixth BATF summit in February

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Dec. 6. The sixth public summit of the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF) will be held in February and it will review the works taken up by different government agencies for the development of the city.

This was decided at a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna. Today's meeting, according to a BATF member, Nandan Nilekani, reviewed the work of three stakeholders — the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). Next Saturday, the work of the other four stakeholders — the city police, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), and Bangalore Telephones — would be reviewed.

The Mayor of Bangalore, P.R. Ramesh, gave an outline of the works taken up by the BMP and the schedules of completion. The BMP had a programme to upgrade 1,500 km of roads and tenders for 976 km had been called for. Government approval was also awaited.

The Commissioner of the BMP, Srinivasamurthy, said that once the underground drainage works were completed by December end, the BMP would begin upgrading roads at a cost of Rs. 130 crore, to be completed by June 2004. The Mayor said that a seven-km stretch of road would be concreted in the old city area by August 2004.

The Mayor informed the meeting that it had been decided to make Bangalore a "zero slum city" for which the BMP had taken up development works in 27 slums which included roads, sanitation, street lighting, etc. The programme would be undertaken from February to August at a cost of Rs. seven crore.
