`Dalits' demand for land being considered'

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR DEC. 6. "The Government will consider granting five acres of fertile land to each Dalit family after a survey of available land," R. Narayan, MLA, and Chairman, Karnataka Housing Board, has said.

He was responding to a demand by the Bhooshakthi Kendra, an international Dalit cultural centre, on the occasion of the celebration of a Dalit festival at Nelehal, near here, today. He said the kendra had submitted a detailed proposal on the scheme of providing land to Dalit families to the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna.

Earlier, M.C. Raj, peethadhyaksha of the kendra, and Jyotiraj, its president, said the kendra was laying stress on three main programmes — securing land for Dalit families for cultivation, forming Dalit panchayats in each village, and preventing atrocities against Dalits.

The panchamunis of the Dalit community — Rudrakshimuni Deshikendra of Kodihalli Math, Samavedamuni Sivacharya of Konkal Math (Andhra Pradesh), Basavamuni Nagideva of Chalavadi Gurupeetha, Mallamuni Swami of Marathi Palya, and Keshavamuni Swami of Chitradurga — spoke. Over 5,000 Dalit families were present.
