dated December 8, 1953: Mankind is Essentially One

Lady Rama Rau, President of the Family Planning Association of India, who was elected Chairman of the newly-formed International Planned Parenthood Federation, was accorded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson.

Addressing an academic group thereafter, she asked American youth to break down barriers between the East and the West, and said, "Even as I represent the East to you of the West, reared in a different culture and wearing, even different clothes, I say to you these differences are superficial. On the important principles that are worth our striving we are very much together... Lady Rama Rau was touring the United States speaking on "India's Social Revolution" under the auspices of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
