Southern Railway and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority officials conducted an aerial survey. The line will run along the East Coast Road. This was one among the six lines for which survey had been completed but could not be taken up. The other lines are Kumbakonam - Namakkal; Jolarpettai - Krishnagiri-Hosur; Katpadi - Chennai via Guindy and Poonamallee; Tindivanam - Cuddalore via Pondicherry and Madurai-Tuticorin via Virudhunagar, Arupukottai, and Vilattikulam. This information was given by the Minister of State, Basanagouda R.Patil, in the Lok Sabha, a release said. The Minister also said conversion of metre gauge line was in progress for 1280 km out of a total length of 2275 km in Tamil Nadu. So far 995 km had been completed. The total cost of the gauge conversion project is estimated at Rs. 2,928 crores and so far Rs. 1,339 crores had been provided for conversion till March this year. For the current year, the Ministry had allotted Rs. 92.89 crores.
