KOCHI DEC. 7. The new building for the EMS Cooperative Library, promoted by the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank, will be inaugurated by the Minister for Cooperation and Ports, M. V. Raghavan, on December 14.

The new building will have a total of 10,000 sq. ft. area and has been built at a cost of about Rs. 2 crores.

It has come up behind the Cooperative Bank headquarters at Kakkanad.

The library, established in 1999 with a corpus from the bank, has become a popular institution in the area and is currently working out of the premises of the bank's headquarters.

The bank authorities are promoting the library as a comprehensive centre for information and leisure.

The library complex will have a full-fledged information centre, facilities for training in Malayalam and English as well as painting.

A children's theatre facility as well as a designer garden for promoting the concept of using the natural beauty of the area for encouraging reading are also part of the plans for the library.

Currently, the library has about 25,000 titles.

The library also subscribes to over a 100 periodicals on different topics.

One of the features of the library is that books are purchased every month and if anyone likes the library to acquire a particular book, a request can be left with the librarian.

At present there are 1,800 members. Of this, 365 are life members.

Besides the collection of books and periodicals, the library also offers Internet browsing facilities as well as CDs for use in the library itself.

The library also plans to have an exhaustive collection of books on Gandhian thought and the cooperative movement. A collection of books based on the CBSE and ICSE syllabi is one of the major features of the library.
