RCDS office inaugurated

KOCHI DEC. 7. The regional office of the Rural Community Development Society (RCDS), an NGO working for the upliftment of tribals, was inaugurated by the Fisheries and Tourism Minister, K. V. Thomas, here today.

The society has been concentrating on the rehabilitation of unwed tribal mothers, freeing of tribal children from child labour, their rehabilitation, education and health awareness programmes.

The RCDS plans to market the forest produce collected by the tribals from Wayanad in the first phase. The forest produce of tribals from other parts of the State will also be marketed by the society at a later stage.

In the first phase, the Society also plans to rehabilitate 50 unwed tribal mothers by providing them permanent employment, said the RCDS president, Rajendraprasad.

The forest produce collected from 3,000 acres of land owned by Attapadi Cooperative Farming Society will be processed and packed by these women, he said. The Sikkim Time Cooperative Limited (Sitco), owned by the Sikkim Government, will also cooperate with the society for providing employment opportunities to the tribals, said K. Rajagopal, the regional manager of Sitco.

Mr. Rajendraprasad presided over the meeting. The Thripunithura municipal chairman, K. K. Mohanan, the Agaly block panchayat president, P. C. Baby, the Agaly grama panchayat president, Babu Thomas, the councillors of Kochi Corporation, N. Anilkumar and Selvaraj, and Mr. Rajagopal spoke. Ravi Kuttikad proposed a vote of thanks.
