Priests `attacked' at two places

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 7. In two separate incidents at Kazhakoottam and Vellarada on Sunday, the Rural police intervened after local vicars complained of assault and harassment.

In Kazhakottam, the police were summoned by the vicar of Vettuthura church when a conciliatory meeting between two opposing sections of the laity took a violent turn. A police party was rushed to the spot.

The vicar had called the meeting to effect a reconciliation between community members hailing from Marianadu and Puthenthope. There had been a long-standing dispute between the groups regarding KSRTC operations in the area. A senior official said the parish priest was yet to lodge a complaint with the police regarding the incident.

In Vellarada, the police have arrested three persons on charges of attempting to disrupt a meeting of the parish committee at Undankode Roman Catholic Church.
