Hayden's distinction

By Mohandas Menon

5th & final day

Matthew Hayden's four catches in India's first innings equals the record by eight other fielders for the most catches in a Test innings against India. Three Australian fielders — Alan Davidson ( Delhi, Dec. 1959), Dav Whatmore (Kanpur, Oct. 1979) and Mark Waugh (Melbourne, Dec. 1999 & Chennai, March 2001) are among the eight.

Justin Langer, who made 121 in the first innings, made a duck in the second to become the 17th Australian to do it on 18 occasions (Bradman has done it twice!). The only other Australian to do so against India was Ian Chappell (Delhi, Nov. 1969).

Matthew Hayden (99) when on 5 became the third batsman during this calendar year to aggregate 1000-plus runs. He now has 1094 in 10 matches, which make him the highest run-getter for the year. He went past the tally of West Indian Brain Lara (1054 runs in 8 matches) and South African Graeme Smith (1008 in 10). Interestingly, all three batsmen are left-handers.

Hayden is the 73rd instance in Tests of a batsman missing a Test hundred by a run. He is the 19th Australian to have this dubious record.
