Bid to muzzle the press in Tamil Nadu, says Paswan

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Dec. 9. The former Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party chief, Ram Vilas Paswan, today raised the issue of action against The Hindu and the Murasoli for "breach of privilege" of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and sought the intervention of the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, to ensure that such things were not repeated.

Raising the issue at the end of zero hour, Mr. Paswan described November 7 as a "black day for democracy." Efforts were being made to muzzleThe Hindu and Murasoli by invoking the privilege issue. "Such developments are not a healthy sign for democracy and all care should be taken that the Fourth Estate is not brow-beaten," he said.

Mr. Joshi did not give any ruling.
