Karthik packs off Prabhu

NEW DELHI DEC. 9. Karnataka's C.P. Karthik knocked out third seed Sameer Prabhu in the boys' singles second round while Tamil Nadu teenager K. Shamini accounted for former National champion Kanchan Basak to open her campaign in the ladies section on the second day of the National ranking (North Zone) table tennis championship at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

On a day when a vast majority of seeds in every section had it easy, Karthik stunned Prabhu 11-4, 6-11, 11-6, 9-11, 13-11.

Shamini served another unpleasant reminder to Kanchan that she was well and truly over the hill. Shamini won 11-5, 11-4, 10-12, 11-7, 11-3.

Meanwhile, the cadet girls' final has been rescheduled for Wednesday. The final was stalled on Monday after Delhi girl Sanya had lodged a protest, questioning the age of Haryana girl Neha after losing the semifinal.

The organiser Hukum Singh today turned down the protest after going through the birth certificate produced by the girl in question. Earlier in the day, the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) secretary Mool Chand Chowhan had left it to Mr. Hukum Singh to deal with the protest, on the pretext that cadet events were an optional event and the Federation had little to with it.
