Gulbarga district to have five new taluks

GULBARGA Dec. 9. The decision of the State Government to carve out five more taluks by splitting existing taluks has fulfilled one of the long pending demands of the people of the district. The government notification appointing special tahsildars for Kaligi in Chitapur taluk, Hunsigi in Surpur taluk, Wadigera in Shahapur taluk, Gulbarga (North), and Gurmitkal is the first step towards the constitution of the new taluks.

However, the Government's decision is likely to stir up emotions in Surpur and among those demanding the establishment of new taluk headquarters at Kamalapur and Mahagaon in Gulbarga taluk. While the people of Kembavi and surrounding villages in Surpur taluk have been demanding taluk status, the Government has brushed aside these claims and announced the appointment of a special tahsildar in Hunsigi.

Similarly, the Government has rejected the demands from Kamalapur and Mahagaon for locating the headquarters of the new taluk in their respective centres and appointed a special tahsildar for Gulbarga (North) by including Mahagaon, Kamalapur, and other areas in the northern part of Gulbarga taluk under the special tahsildar. This decision is not likely to go down well with the people of the politically volatile Mahagaon and Kamalapur.

The decision to split Chitapur taluk, considered to be the biggest taluk in the State, and appoint a special tahsildar for Kaligi, is a victory for the people of the Kaligi region who have been fighting for the creation of a new taluk under the leadership of the former MLA, Vishwanath Patil Hebbal, and the former Gulbarga Development Authority Chairman, Vittal Doddamani. The Government has already appointed a special tahsildar in Yedrami indicating its decision to split Jewargi taluk.

The addition of six more taluks to the existing of 10 taluks in the district is also the first step taken by the Government to split Gulbarga district and carving out a new one.

Welcoming the decision to appoint a special tahsildar for Kaligi, Mr. Hebbal and Mr. Doddamani told presspersons that the three district reorganisation committees had unanimously recommended Kaligi as the headquarters for the new taluk to be carved out from the existing Chitapur taluk and including some parts of Chincholi taluk. They thanked the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, for taking the initiative for the appointment of the special tahsildars and sought the creation of infrastructure.
