Son, grandson arrested in connection with man's murder

BANGALORE, Dec. 9. The Ulsoor Gate Police arrested Seetharam Bhat and his son, Anil Kumar Bhat, on the charges of abducting and murdering the father of the former, K. Manjunath Bhat, at Kigga village in Sringeri taluk of Shimoga. Police said Seetharam Bhat's son-in-law, Suresh, who was also allegedly involved in the murder, was absconding. A property dispute was reported to be the motive behind the murder.

Police said Manjunath Bhat left his house in Ulsoor Gate Police Station limits here in April and did not return. His second son, K.M.R.S. Bhat, then lodged a complaint that his father was missing. Later, he lodged another complaint alleging that the three accused had abducted his father to Kigga. Police interrogated Krishnamurthy, a barber, who had reportedly sold two precious stones rings of the victim to a jeweller in Sringeri. Police said they found out that Seetharam Bhat had given the rings to Krishnamurthy.

According to police, during interrogations, the accused said they murdered Manjunath Bhat, set the body ablaze, and dumped it in the Nandini. The dispute was related to a land measuring four acres at Kigga, police added.

Seized: The City Crime Branch Police said they seized 22 mobile phones, television sets, computers, cameras, radio sets, video cassette players, 55 grams of gold jewellery, two Maruti cars and a Maruti Omni allegedly stolen by Husein Basha of Dayananda Slum and Hayaz, alias Chowdhary, of Bakshi Gardens. Basha has been arrested.

Police said the accused had allegedly stolen the mobile phones from a showroom in Chamarajpet Police Station limits. They were also allegedly involved in the theft of household articles from the house of Balachandran Nair in Chamarajpet. Two car theft cases, one in Kalasipalyam and another in Chamarajpet, were also pending against them, police added.

Arrested:The City Crime Branch Police arrested Somanna and Babu, alias Shankar Babu, of Moulali Betta slums in Hyderabad on the charge of trying to peddle ganja at a lodge on Seegebeli Road in City Market Police Station limits. The police said they had confiscated 15 kg. of ganja worth about Rs. 75,000 from their possession.

Killed in accident: Aravind Upadhyaya, employee of Infosys Technologies, was killed in a road accident in Madiwala Police Station limits on Monday night. Police said the victim was riding his motorcycle on Hosur Road when he lost control of his vehicle and fell down. A lorry, which came from behind, ran him over. He died on the spot. The Madiwala police arrested the lorry driver and seized the vehicle.

Burgled: Burglars broke into the house of a businessman, Balaji Iyer, at 2nd main, Gangadhara Extension and escaped with cash and jewellery in Vijayanagar Police Station limits.

Police said Mr. Iyer and his family were away for two days, and when they returned on Tuesday, the valuables were found missing.

Another burglary case was reported in Vidyaranyapura Police Station limits where the house of Varalakshmi, an ayah in Sanjay Gandhi hospital, was broken into. The burglars escaped with cash and jewellery.
