According to the police, the three, along with five of their classmates, climbed a hillock about one km. from the college to have lunch. T. Prabhu ventured to the pond to catch fish in a handkerchief. He slipped into the water and drowned. P.L. Prabhu, Khan, and Sharief jumped into the pond to save him. Sharief swam to safety, but the others drowned. Some of the students tried to pull out Khan from the pond. But their efforts did not succeed and he was declared dead in Mallya Hospital. The bodies of T. Prabhu and P.L. Prabhu were recovered. After post-mortem, they were handed over to their families. The post-mortem would be conducted on Khan's body on Wednesday, police said. The 25-foot-deep pond is fenced on all sides and a board cautioning people against venturing into is prominently displayed. According to the Ramanagaram Police, the students were nature lovers and used to visit nature spots often. The three victims travelled daily to the college from the city. A pall of gloom surrounded the college campus after the news of the tragedy spread. Some students said that had the victims attended a seminar that began at 11.30 a.m., they would have escaped death.
