Goshree bridges construction enters final phase

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI DEC. 9. Work on the trio of Goshree bridges entered the final phase today with the first box girder for the third bridge linking Vallarpadam and Vypeen islands being placed successfully this afternoon.

The occasion was marked by a massive display of fireworks on the Vypeen island as the islanders, led by the Ernakulam-Vypeen Bridges Action Council and the Vypeen Island Two-Wheelers' Association, celebrated the occasion. It had taken the islanders nearly half-a-century to realise their dream of a bridge link to the Ernakulam mainland.

People in country and mechanised boats cheered lustily as the box girder was brought to pier Numbers 4 and 5. Besides, hundreds of people gathered on the Vypeen island to witness the occasion. Sweets were distributed after the box girder was put in place.

The Port Trust Chairman, Jacob Thomas, and the secretary of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) and District Collector, Gyanesh Kumar, were present on the occasion.

The Vypeen-Vallarpadam bridge has a total length of 450 metres and requires nine girders that will be placed over 64 piles. Of this, work on 50 marine piles is complete.
