S.P. Swamy, president of the front, said the Chief Minister had assured them that he would look into the demands. He said that if no action was taken by the Government in the next 20 days, members of the front would stage a dharna in front of the Chief Minister's residence. Mr. Swamy said some of the neighbouring States had set up such a commission. Violation of human rights, such as child labour, atrocities against women and on innocent people, in the State could be checked only if the Government set up a Human Rights Commission. Mr. Swamy said the front appreciated the Lokayukta's effort to curb corruption in various departments and in bureaucracy and urged the Chief Minister to give it more powers to initiate independent action against wrongdoers. The memorandum also demanded that human rights be included as a subject in the curriculum in colleges, he added.
