TN in a strong position

By Our Special Correspondent

Chennai Dec. 10. Ahead by 275 runs and with eight second innings wickets remaining, Tamil Nadu was in a strong position, although the home team's decision not to enforce the follow on may have provided Assam with a lifeline on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group `B' encounter at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, here, on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu was 99 for two at stumps, with skipper and opener S. Suresh (50, 118b, 5x4) and S. Badrinath (26) together.

The talking point of the afternoon was Tamil Nadu's decision to bat a second time after bundling out Assam for 134 at the stroke of tea. The home team that had earlier been dismissed for 310 had gained a lead of 176, with the Assam innings consuming just 49.1 overs.

Tamil Nadu coach B. Arun said the move was influenced by the fact that the pitch was wearing out. "We wanted to avoid batting last on this wicket. Moreover, one of our frontline pacemen M.R. Shrinivas suffered an ankle injury today," said Arun.

The host appeared full of beans on the field with R. Ramkumar, in the midst of a rewarding season, picking up four wickets. The left-arm spinner did not really deliver from close to the stumps, but he stuck to an off-stump line, and put seeds of doubts in the minds of the batsmen with his flight and turn. He castled R. Satish with a lovely arm ball too.

Tamil Nadu's young pace pack also had its moments with D. Tamilkumaran making an impressive debut, bowling a full length and moving the ball both ways at a brisk pace, while C. Ganapathy got the ball to climb sharply on occasion.

Assam was off to a disastrous start when Parag Das perished to the first ball edging Shrinivas to Vidyut Sivaramakrishan at second slip. The innings that lacked in application continued to falter with the efforts from Vasant Saravanan and Gautam Dutta, both made 30, being the highest contributions.
