'A compassionate doctor'

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC.10. It was with a sense of shock and grief that colleagues of Raj Kumar Gupta at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital today received the news of his murder. And while many expressed their satisfaction at the work done by police, they wondered how someone "as gentle as Dr. Gupta could become victim of such brutality."

In a statement, the authorities expressed their disbelief and deep sorrow at the unfortunate murder of an able worker and an efficient doctor. The hospital staff also organised a condolence meeting at 2-30 p.m. on Thursday in the hospital. The private out patient department will remain closed in his memory.

Dr. Gupta, 51, had joined the hospital's Department of Medicine in 1985 as a junior consultant and in 1997 was promoted to the post of a senior consultant. A compassionate physician who specialised in diabetics, Dr. Gupta represented his hospital in many national and international seminars on the subject.

Speaking about Dr. Gupta murder, the Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, S.K. Sama, said: "We are shocked at the dramatic chain of events. Dr. Gupta was an excellent doctor; always ready to bring to his patients the benefits of the advancements in his field and was never afraid to try out new and better modes of treatment. And as a senior physician, his contribution to his department has always been valuable. We feel that we have lost an important member of the family and it is a difficult time for all of us.''
