This Day That Age
In Stockholm on the 10th, Sweden's King Gustav Adolf gave away, in a traditional ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall, the 1953 Nobel Prizes for Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, and Literature. The Literature Prize to Sir Winston Churchill was received by Lady Churchill, who read out a message from him at the banquet after the presentation. Sir Winston said, "The prize is an honour for me, alike unique and unexpected. The judgment of the Swedish Academy is accepted as impartial, authoritative, and sincere. I am proud but also, I must admit, awe-struck by the decision to include me. Since Alfred Nobel died in 1896, we have entered an age of storm and tragedy. The power of man has grown in every sphere, except over himself. The fearful question confronts us: `Have our problems got beyond our control?' Undoubtedly we are passing through a phase where this may well be true. May we humble ourselves, and seek for guidance and mercy."
