Baglihar project to be ready by 2005

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Dec. 11. The Jammu and Kashmir Government has proposed to complete the Baglihar hydro power project being built on the Chenab river in Chanderkote area of Doda district by 2005.

The Pakistan Government has opposed the construction of the project, as it terms it a violation of the Indus Water Treaty signed by both countries in 1960. It has also threatened to serve a notice asking it to stop work by December 31.

Talking to The Hindu, the J&K Power Minister, Mohammad Sharief Niaz, said: "Let Pakistan raise baseless objections about the dam, but we have decided to expedite the project. We have made all the arrangements for the completion of the first phase by the 2005. Earlier, the dam was scheduled to be completed in 2006."

The Minister said, "Pakistan objections to the dam have no base as it is constructed on the running water. It is not in our interest to store water."
