The BSE barometer had ended at 5172.13 on April 13, 2000 and at 5426.82 on April 12, 2000. FII activity, however, was confined to select bank, IT and cement counters. The index-based stocks such as HDFC Bank, HDFC, Grasim, GACL, ACC, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer, Tisco and Tata Motors were prominent gainers. Reflecting selective upsurge, the BSE benchmark 30-share index opened at 5321.49 and later fluctuated between 5343.91 and 5283.75 before ending at 5315.81 against yesterday's close of 5299.96, netting a gain of 15.85 points. The broad-based BSE-100 index edged up further by 1.42 points to 2755.33 from 2753.91. The FIIs who have been absorbing sales made by the Unit Trust of India for the past couple of sessions, making a hefty net investments of Rs. 960 crores on December 9 and 10, were heavy buyers, mainly in Tisco, brokers said. The UTI was believed to be fairly heavy seller in the top heavyweight RIL that also witnessed equally good support. The rally in software majors was attributed to sharp rise in the Nasdaq Composite Index yesterday. PTI
