Row in Himachal Pradesh over leakage of tapes

SHIMLA DEC. 12. The leakage of tapes seeking to link the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, V.B. Singh, and other Congress leaders with recruitments made by the Subordinate Services Selection Board has triggered a major political controversy in the State with the Opposition BJP and the ruling Congress charging each other with adopting double standard in appointments.

While the BJP leader and former Chief Minister, P.K. Dhumal, led a delegation to the Governor, V.S. Kokje, and handed over a memorandum today demanding a CBI inquiry into the `tapes' and into the appointments made in the University, Mr. Singh described it as ``a deep-rooted conspiracy'' against him.

Mr. Dhumal said Congress leaders had been recommending the names of candidates for selection and at the same time criticising the Board and the previous Government headed by him.

He alleged that the names of the Chief Minister and some of his Cabinet colleagues figured in the tape and the CBI should probe the issue.

The former Services Selection Board Chairman, S.M. Katwal, denied having leaked the tape to the press.
