Highest day-score at the Adelaide Oval

By Mohandas Menon

Irfan Pathan became India's 248th player to make Test debut.

During the course of his knock Ricky Ponting (when on 27) became the fourth batsman to aggregate 1000-plus runs this calendar year after Matthew Hayden (1106 runs), Brian Lara (1054) and Graeme Smith (1008). Ponting with 1149 runs now has the most runs in 2003.

Steve Waugh, when on 16, became the only second batsman after Allan Border (1415 runs in 16 matches) to aggregate 1000 runs at this ground in Tests. It was Waugh's 15th match at this venue. He now has 1014 runs.

Simon Katich's 75 was his highest Test score of his career. Playing in his 4th match, his previous highest score of 52 came against Zimbabwe at Sydney in October this year.

Australia's 400 for five on the first day was the highest score made by any team on any day at the Adelaide Oval since the first Test here way back in 1884. The previous highest was the 387 for six made by the home team against West Indies on the second day on 25 January 1969.
