Tamil Nadu's debutant paceman, Tamilkumaran, castles Raghuram, one of his five scalps in Assam's second innings, in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.
Tamil Nadu, with four points from the encounter, now has 15 from five matches, while Assam, that drew a blank in Chennai, has two from four. Resuming at 158 for six, Assam lost key batsman Vasanth Saravanan (62, 123b, 10x4) to a peach of a delivery from Tamilkumaran that rose awkwardly from just short of a good length and kissed the gloves of the batsman for 'keeper Dinesh Kaarthick to hold a regulation offering. Saravanan added just one run to his overnight 61. The 20-year-old Tamilkumaran, who has a fluent, rhythmic run-up that blends well with his action, generated good pace from the Wallahjah Road end. He then castled R. Raghuram (1) with a full length delivery after softening up the batsman with a short-pitched ball, and ended the match when R.K. Yadav (0) spooned a catch to Sunil Viswanathan at covers. Tamilkumaran's spell on Friday read an impressive 5.2-1-18-3. "The wicket of Vasanth Saravanan was special to me. This was my first game and I am so happy," he said. Paceman C. Ganapathy chipped in with the wicket of Gautam Dutta (26), who was caught at mid off by substitute E. Suresh. Tamil Nadu coach B. Arun was all praise for Tamilkumaran's effort. "I think he is the find of the season for us. He got seven wickets in his very first match, but more than his tally, I was happy with the way he bowled." On the side's batting, he said, " S. Badrinath is gaining in confidence with every match. Last year, we had problems with our lower order, but in this game, it was the lower order that bailed us out from a difficult situation in the first innings." Assam coach Abdul Jabbar conceded his team was outplayed. "The batsmen did not apply themselves but the pressure put on by the bowlers may have forced them to play such strokes." Interestingly, Jabbar happens to be the coach of Tamilkumaran at Chemplast, a leading side from Chennai. "That boy has a lot of talent," said Jabbar about Tamilkumaran. Tamil Nadu meets Hyderabad in an away game on December 17, while Assam takes on Rajasthan on the same day in Guwahati.
