Mahendra Singh Bhati was the son of Devi Singh Bhati, former Minister and the president of the newly formed Rajasthan Samajik Nyaya Manch. He had won from Bikaner Lok Sabha seat in 1996 on the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Mahendra Singh, 44, was the elder son of Devi Singh. In a tragic coincidence his younger son, Ravindra Singh, and his mother too died in a road accident in December 1998, soon after Assembly elections in the State. According to information reaching here, Mahendra Singh and his companions were returning from a dinner at a friend's place in Khara village when the accident took place. One his companions, Narendra Pandey also died on the spot while another friend, Kheev Singh, was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries. Mahendra Singh is survived by his wife and two children. The reports said the same trawler was involved in an accident with a passenger bus on Wednesday morning in which one person was killed and 35 others were injured. Leaving behind the political differences during the acrimonious campaign in the run up to the Assembly elections, the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, today visited the Bhati household in Bikaner. The former Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot and the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president, Girija Vyas, too conveyed their condolence to Mr. Bhati. A large number of political leaders including the Union Minister of State, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the BJP leaders Rajendra Rathore, Manikchand Surana and Nandlal Vyas besides the Congress leaders, B.D. Kalla and Asq Ali Tak and Mr. Bhati's colleague in RSNM, Lokendra Singh Kalvi, attended the funeral at Bikaner. The markets too remained closed in Bikaner today.
