Old Secretariat gets a new look

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 12. Even as the Old Secretariat is gearing up to welcome new and old members who would be part of the Third House, finishing touches are being given to large-scale renovation work being carried out at the complex.

To restore the heritage building to its original glory, all encroachments over the corridors of the Assembly complex have been removed. The entire corridor, which had been occupied by the expanding offices of the various Ministers, has been cleared, except the portion housing the Chief Minister's staff at present. The entire flooring of the corridor has been re-laid. The old worn out floor has given way to brand new marble flooring. Also, weather-beaten outer walls and pillars have been restored, giving a new look to the building.

The entire building has been given a coat of fresh paint and the lawns are being landscaped. The Assembly Secretariat is also planning to set up a standardised library at the office of the Leader of the Opposition, which will now be shifted to a new place. In addition, the Secretariat has got the offices of certain departments vacated from the premises and these will be placed at the disposal of the representatives of small parties who have made it to the Assembly this time. The Assembly Secretariat is also planning to re-allocate the rooms of the six Ministers in the new Assembly. There is also a proposal to have a separate meeting chamber for the Speaker of the Assembly.

The Delhi Assembly Secretariat has already issued a bulletin to the newly elected legislators informing them about the notification of the new House issued by the Election Commission on December 5. The MLAs have also been asked to bring their original certificate of election issued by the Returning Officer under Rule 66 of Code of Conduct of Election Rules 1961. The Assembly has also set in motion the process for issuing identity cards to the new members and sought the bio-data of the new members.

According to the Delhi Assembly secretary, Siddharth Rao, the Assembly Secretariat is all geared up to hold the new session whenever directions in this regard came from the new Delhi Cabinet. He said all the members are trickling in to submit the details and the Assembly Secretariat was issuing the necessary documents required by them.
