Harare non-member of Commonwealth

London Dec. 13. As a sequel to Zimbabwe's withdrawal from the Commonwealth, the country becomes a non-member state and is no longer eligible to receive assistance from or attend meetings of the grouping, its Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, has said.

In a statement, Mr. McKinnon said Commonwealth organisations should treat Zimbabwe as a non-member state. The statement said Mr. McKinnon had received an official letter dated December 11, 2003 from the Government of Zimbabwe, signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I.S.G. Mudenge, confirming that Zimbabwe has terminated its membership of the Commonwealth with effect from December 7, 2003.
