Police burst teargas in Bihar jail

Aurangabad (Bihar) Dec. 13. Police burst teargas shell today to quell violent inmates of the Aurangabad district jail who, enraged over the death of a fellow prisoner, indulged in heavy brickbat, official sources said.

The acting jail superintendent, Shivnandan Paswan, and some other policemen and jail staff were injured in the violence.

Violence erupted following the death of a prisoner after prolonged illness, which the inmates attributed to lack of medical attention. When the authorities tried to take away the body, the inmates pelted stones. As the situation threatened to go out of control, police burst teargas shells and pushed back the inmates to their cells. The situation was now under control. The body was sent for post-mortem examination.
