Minister's appeal to oil firms' staff

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Ram Naik, has appealed to the employees of public sector oil companies to withdraw their proposed strike on December 16 as this would cause great inconvenience to the public and tarnish the image of the oil sector.

Making an appeal in this regard during a meeting with leaders representing some trade unions today, Mr. Naik told them that the Government was responsive and sympathetic to the workers' concerns.

The unions have given a call for a token strike on December 16 against the Government's decision to disinvest some state-owned oil companies.

Mr. Naik reportedly told the trade union leaders that the issues raised by them had wider ramifications for all PSUs and would therefore require detailed discussions at the highest level in the Government.

The issue of disinvestment of oil PSUs was before the Supreme Court, and it would be desirable to wait for the verdict, he said.
