Projects in Cauvery Basin to be speeded up

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Dec. 15. The Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation (Cauvery Basin), M. Shivanna, has said that the Government will accelerate all pending projects apart from ensuring the completion of the Varuna Canal work by June 2004 to ensure irrigation facilities to parts of the Mysore district.

He told presspersons here today that he was grateful to the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, for giving him the weighty portfolio and said being aware of the problems in the Cauvery Basin he would do his best and ensure that the Krishna Government earned a good name. "I will carry out surprise inspections of the works and will take prompt action on complaints referred by farmers. Officials who do not discharge their duties as expected will have to face the consequences," he said. Mr. Shivanna said he had called a meeting of senior officials of the Irrigation Department connected with the Cauvery Basin in Bangalore on Wednesday. Thereafter, there would be regular reviews of the works under execution and officials would be asked to file reports.
