Shooting
By A. Joseph Antony
Farid Uddin Siddiqui, the winner of the men's 50m 3 Positions rifle title in the 47th National shooting Championship in Hyderabad on Monday.
Despite a scare in the kneeling event's sighters, when the bolt of his weapon slipped, the defending champion clambered back to the top in the all-important and concluding series. Confident of victory, the KCP Sanda village native of Fatehpur District, Uttar Pradesh, made sure his German made Anschutz spoke eloquently for him, steering him to the fore in the latter half of the last 10 shots. A Naib Subedar with the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) in the Military Headquarters of War (MHOW), he's aiming to obtain an Olympic quota at the Asian championships in Kuala Lumpur, in February next year. He's been in the field for 14 years, but took up the three-position event about seven years ago. Third to the finish was T.C. Palangappa, also from the Army, which had five of its men in the eight-man final line-up. In Sunday's champion of champions contest, Sandeep Tarte, Asha Jadhav, Deepali Deshpande, Saleem H., Chetan Preet Kaur, Imran Hassan Khan, Leena Shirodkar, Kuheli Gangulee made the final eight. In the competition that eliminates the shooter with the lowest aggregate after a specified number of shots, Kuheli Gangulee made her exit first, followed by Leena Shirodkar, Deepali Deshpande, Saleem H., Imran Hassan Khan and Asha Jadav. In the face off between the top pair of Tarte and Chetan Preet, the former tallied 30.4 from three while the latter managed 30.2. The Army also called the shots in the men's 25 metre rapid fire competition, B.L. Dhaka taking the gold and Ram Kishan the bronze. Dhaka, a Subedar with the First Guards regiment, but based in AMU, MHOW and Kishan, a para commando, then combined with Pemba Tamang for the team championship gold as well. The sport pistol event for women could not be gone through on Monday, since the technicians seemed unfamiliar with the software supporting the scoring system. Range Officer Dharma Lingam put off the competition to Tuesday morning. The results: 50 m three position: Men: 1. Farid Uddin Siddiqui 1239.2 (Army) 2. Sanjeev Rajput 1236.7 (Navy) 3. T.C.
