dated December 17, 1953: Governor's Message on Air Crash Victims

Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor of Madras, said in a condolence message: "I was stunned to learn of the terrible air disaster to the night plane to Madras, and the heavy toll it took of valuable lives. Mr. Hariharnath Sastri was known to me from his early youth as a student of the Kashi Vidyapith of which he was a brilliant alumnus. I remember all too vividly his great eagerness to learn, when I took for him English and Political Science in those early days of the Non-Cooperation Movement. I continued to be associated with him in public life. I greatly admired his devotion to the cause of labour, and the sympathetic understanding he brought to bear on the solution of many problems that face industry, vis-à-vis relations between employers and employed. It is difficult to find words to console his cruelly bereaved wife who was a true comrade to him in every way. Mr. Ragunandan Saran, another friend who lost his life at Nagpur, was a valuable colleague to me in Congress work, and intimately known to me for over a quarter of a century.

He belonged to Delhi. With his family, he recently came down to Madras where he established a flourishing motor business and where his gifted wife, Raksha, has already made a mark in social work. The death of this good man deprives public life of a benefactor, and innumerable individuals of a true and loyal friend. I knew Mr. R. K. Vaish too for many years past as an able officer of the Finance Department. I first knew him in 1947, when I went to Karachi as High Commissioner and where he was Collector of Customs just before Partition. I send my sincerest condolences to all the families on their grievous bereavement."
