"I send my hearty congratulations to the Indian cricket team for its spectacular victory in the Adelaide Test. This first win in Australia after 22 years is the result of great teamwork and inspiring tenacity in the face of a seemingly impossible task. "My special praise for Rahul Dravid for his dependable play in both innings and, especially, his record-breaking double century", Vajpayee said in a statement here. Both Houses of the Parliament also congratulated the Indian cricket team. As senior Lok Sabha member Ram Vilas Paswan announced the victory during Question Hour, Speaker Manohar Joshi asked members to join him in sending their greetings to the Indian team. In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat congragulated the Indian team and hoped ``it would maintain the same spirit in the rest of the matches''. The Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Vikram Verma, in a congratulatory message to the Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said the country was happy and proud on this historic victory, according to an official release. The Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Vijay Goel, also sent congratulations to the team. Congratulating the Indian team for its `magnificent victory', the BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, expressed confidence of winning the series Down Under. "All Indians are proud on this magnificent victory by our boys. Full credit to the Indian team for pulling off this victory from a very difficult situation" said Dalmiya. "The win also removed the perception that the Indians cannot win abroad" Dalmiya said. "The team has played to their real potential. It is just the beginning" The chairman of selectors, Syed Kirmani said "We are all proud of the magnificent achievement of the entire team. I would like to congratulate Sourav Ganguly on this historic win". "While Rahul Dravid played outstandingly, he was well supported by all the team members, especially Laxman, Kumble and Agarkar,'' he added. Sunil Gavaskar, who led the team that last beat Australia in their backyard in 1981-82, said the win was just the first step towards achieving even greater goals. "The objective has to be to win the series. India is a good team but it will be called great if the series is also won", said Gavaskar, who is in Australia as a commentator. Former captain Kapil Dev congratulated the team and said the moment will be cherished for long. "Let the boys enjoy the moment, they deserve every bit of the success that has come their way. It was a great game of cricket,'' said Kapil, under whose leadership India had last won an overseas series in 1986. Rahul Dravid's parents were overjoyed. "We are very, very happy,'' the proud parents Sharad and Pushpa Dravid _ told reporters at their Indiranagar residence here. "We hope he will continue to do well in future".
