Gujarat agrees on CBI probe into rape incident

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI DEC. 16. The Gujarat Government today told the Supreme Court that it was ready to refer to the Central Bureau of Investigation a case relating to the gang rape of women, including a pregnant woman, Bilkis Yakub Rasool, by a mob soon after the Godhra train carnage in February last.

In the light of this submission, a three-judge Bench, comprising Justice S. Rajendra Babu, Justice A.R. Lakshmanan and Justice G.P. Mathur, directed the CBI to file a status report of the investigation into the case within eight weeks.

The order was passed on an application from Ms. Rasool seeking a CBI probe into the incident.

On September 8, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the State Government and police on a petition from her for a CBI probe into the manner in which the police had closed the case on technical grounds despite medical reports confirming that her modesty had been outraged.
