Tushar Liberhan makes a forehand return en route to his victory over Rupesh Roy in the National Open tennis championship in New Delhi on Tuesday.
In unfinished matches that started late following rain-delay, the eighth-seeded Parantap Singh saved two match-points in the 12th game of the decider, to record a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over Rishi Sridhar. Equally impressive was the manner in which Gurmehar Singh, son of Ajitpal Singh, the Indian hockey captain of the 1975 World Cup triumph, unleashed his authoritative strokes against the former National champion, Vasudeva Reddy, in another three-setter, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
All eyes were on the clash between two talented juniors, Tushar Liberhan and Rupesh Roy. In recent weeks, Tushar had shown a maturity in tackling high quality opponents, and it was no surprise that he tamed Rupesh, the adidas National junior champion, in straight sets.
There was a lot of excitement in the women's section, but it was experience that seemed to count in the duel between the third-seeded Archana Venkataraman and wild card Madura Ranganathan. The latter won an extended tie-break in the second set to push the contest into the decider, but the steady-stroking Archana eventually pulled through in the long-drawn encounter under the floodlights. It should be a lively fare when Archana next tackles Sanaa Bhambri. Local girl Parul Goswami enacted the biggest upset of her career, as she beat the eighth-seeded Sheethal Goutham in three sets. Parul can hope to move further ahead when she meets Anupama Rajur in the pre-quarterfinals.
